We are on a mission to

Provide

Provide quality education to children and sustained healthcare support to people from socio-economically weaker sections of society in rural and peri-urban Bangalore.

Leverage

Leverage the intersectionality of education, healthcare, and empowerment of rural women to build a progressive community.

Engage

Engage, employ and build agency in women from rural communities to address the massive learning and healthcare disparities, thereby creating an equitable platform for socio-economic development.

Our programs

At One Billion Literates Foundation (OBLF), we believe in the transformative power of education. Our flagship program, Elevate, is an activity-based and interactive learning methodology that provides robust and comprehensive English literacy for children in rural and peri-urban government schools. Addressing the educational disparities by offering high-quality English language teaching, Elevate enhances both learning outcomes and bridges the gap between grade-level expectations and actual learning achievements. Together, we’re creating environments where every child in underserved areas has the chance to thrive, opening doors to academic success and wider opportunities.

Kickstart is OBLF’s dynamic program that identifies and trains semi-educated women from the communities it serves, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to become community teachers and frontline health workers. Kickstart comprises livelihood training sessions that enhance economic and employment opportunities and builds self-sufficiency. Our holistic approach promotes both professional and personal growth, enabling these women to deliver effective education and healthcare services while fostering a love for learning and well-being in their communities.

Over the past 14 years, more than 500 women have been trained and upskilled, with over 150 gaining meaningful employment and actively contributing to OBLF’s educational and healthcare programs.

The Nurture program by OBLF is committed to uplifting highly marginalized communities by focusing on crucial aspects such as education, healthcare, and sanitation to enhance their quality of life. In Anekal, Bengaluru, Nurture works with the Hakkipikki (a vulnerable tribal group), Iruliga tribes, and a migrant waste pickers’ community in Heelalige, offering comprehensive support in these areas. Over 2,000 people receive regular healthcare services.

Over the past two years, through our dedicated learning center at the Waste Picker Colony, we have made efforts to address the learning gap, leading to the mainstreaming of 40+ children into government schools. By addressing these critical needs, Nurture promotes empowerment, self-reliance, and sustainable change within these communities.

At OBLF, our integrated healthcare approach ensures seamless transitions and comprehensive care as community health needs evolve. We address the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), other Life Limiting illnesses, and Mental Health disorders by providing and integrating village-based Primary Health Clinics, Home Care Visits, Geriatric-Palliative Care, and Mental Healthcare into our scope of the continuum of primary health care.

Our approach to healthcare ensures close engagement of the communities, early detection, holistic treatment, and continuous management. This integration enhances accessibility and adherence to treatment protocols, reduces stigma, and fosters a sustainable care model that adapts to our community’s evolving needs. We are dedicated to delivering compassionate care that uplifts and supports every individual’s well-being.
